Deleting a Judge Assignment
Sometimes a section is set up for two judges but only one is available. The Delete Judge Assignment tool removes a single judge from a single section, without re-pairing anything or touching the other judges.
Where to find it
Go to Admin > Pair/Section > Advanced and click Delete Judge Assignment.

Step 1: Choose the judge
Make four selections, in order. Each list unlocks after the previous one is chosen, and only schedule blocks, events and sections that already have judges assigned are shown.
- Schedule Block
- Event
- Section (the list shows the ballot code and how many judges the section has)
- Judge to Remove
Click Review. Nothing is deleted yet.
Step 2: Review
The review page shows the schedule block, event, section, ballot code, the competitors in the section, and the judge who will be removed. Under What will happen it also tells you which judge will remain and lists any eBallot that will be deleted along with the assignment. For example:
Judge 2 is removed from Section 1. The section will have 1 judge. (Judge 1: Sarina Wang (Example University))
If the judge was already sent their eBallot, you will see a warning. Their eBallot link stops working once they are removed, so let them know they are no longer judging that section.
Step 3: Confirm
Tick the confirmation box, then click Delete Judge Assignment. The button stays disabled until the box is ticked. Click Cancel to leave without changing anything.
Pairings, rooms, competitors, the other judges and any recorded results are not changed. The deletion is recorded in the tournament's audit log.
When a judge cannot be removed
To prevent accidents, the tool will not let you remove a judge in these situations. The review page explains which one applies.
- The section would have no judge left. Every section must keep at least one assigned judge. To swap in a different judge, use the Pair/Section View/Edit page or Re-Assign Judges instead.
- It is not the last judge in the section. Only the highest-numbered judge can be removed (for example Judge 2 of 2), because recorded results and feedback are tied to the judge number. If you need to remove Judge 1, use View/Edit to move the other judge into the Judge 1 slot first, then remove Judge 2.
- The judge already has a result recorded for that section, on paper or through an eBallot.
- Async debate elimination rounds. Judges there are assigned in packets across several matchups, so use Re-Assign Judges for those events.
Good to know
- If someone else changes the same assignment while you are on the review page, the delete is refused and nothing is removed. Just start again from Step 1.
- Deleting is not undone from this page. To put a judge back, use the Pair/Section View/Edit page or Re-Assign Judges.
